Clarabel Brake Van

Our second railway carriage Clarabel is based on a brake van. Many British freight trains formerly had no continuous brake so the only available brakes were those on the locomotive and the brake van. This shortage of brake power resulted in speeds being restricted to 25 mph (40 km/h). In the event of a coupling breaking, the brake van allowed the decoupled part of the train to be safely stopped. Hopefully this won’t happen when you stay with us!

The Van includes an oriel window, a feature that allowed the guard to look safely down the length of the moving train. We have styled Clarabel in an industrial style to reflect the functional heritage without compromising comfort.

Clarabel is dog friendly and we have some glorious walks nearby down by the river Eden and in High Stand woods.

Our carriage has three rooms:

A lounge/ dining area including the following:

A small kitchen area with a fridge, 2 ring hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and sink, all cooking equipment provided
A breakfast bar and stools
A woodburning stove with a trug of logs provided. Additional logs can be purchased.
Central heating radiator
A sofa and coffee table
A Revival Uno DAB/DAB+/FM radio with blue tooth

A bedroom is accessed through a door at the end of a corridor and includes the following:

A double bed (all bedding and towels provided)
Bedside tables with drawers
An open wardrobe storage alcove with shelves and hanging space
Central heating radiator
A working communication cord which rings a bell in the lounge for those emergency needs – (tea in bed or G&T)!
Oriel window seat with a view across the Eden Valley
A fire exit door

A double ended bath and shower attachment
A sink & toilet
A heated towel rail

An outside area:

A fenced off area with seating and a firepit/barbeque overlooking our sheep field with stunning views down the valley.
A table and bench for outdoor refreshments.
